A flat rate results in SaskTel paying out less money to its members and 'splitting' the union once again by not treating everyone the same. We can not keep allowing this to happen or we will be progressing towards not having a union at all! If we were to implement flat rating on a long term scale, what we are doing is having one pay scale for all jobs at SaskTel. We are a telecommunications company. The telecommunications industry is driven by technology. SaskTel needs to be able to recruit and retain skilled employees at key positions. Also, long term employees need to be considered before outside employees since their experience is valuable too. If we are unable to recruit or maintain these employees, we will have no technical employees. No technical employees means more consultants performing these duties for us. It can lead to us not being able to hire who we need to make this business run. A retention bonus or any flat rate increase will always be viewed as not fair and does not maintain a strong union. A strong union is what gives us leverage when bargaining. Some members STILL work longer hours which ALSO splits the union vote. We must have solidarity to be a strong union. This means we all get the SAME percentage of increases and all be treated the same. |
